Our Approach to AI in Publishing
Our Approach to Artificial Intelligence in Publishing
Artificial intelligence has become one of the biggest conversations in publishing. Some people embrace it. Others reject it completely.
At Creative James Media, we believe the answer isn’t simply yes or no. There is a difference between AI tools and Generative AI. Some authors have been using Pro Writing Aid and Grammerly for years. This is AI, but it is used as a tool. A tool some authors use and we understand the need and desire to make sure a manuscript is polished before submitting or publishing. While we refuse to use tools such as these for editing, we understand that some authors have used them, and we don’t disqualify them for it.
We believe stories should come from people. Writing is more than assembling words into sentences. It’s lived experience, imagination, emotion, and perspective. Readers connect with books because another human being created them. Novels written with AI lose the soul behind them, and thus the spark which makes books tug at your heart.
That’s why we require authors to disclose significant AI use during the writing process. Transparency matters.
We also believe editing requires human judgment. An editor doesn’t simply correct grammar. They help shape voice, pacing, character development, and emotional impact. Those decisions require experience and empathy. There’s also author voice and style that must be maintained through an edit. Using AI to edit takes that away and can make a book boring. AI doesn’t understand fiction writing and a lot of the edits made through AI destroy the manuscript instead of making it better. A good editor knows when to apply rules and when those rules must be ignored in favor of artistic style.
That doesn’t mean technology has no place in publishing. Like spellcheck or grammar software, AI tools may assist with administrative tasks or brainstorming. But assistance should never replace creativity.
Our goal is to protect what makes books meaningful while remaining open to responsible technological advances.
Publishing has always evolved. Printing presses, computers, ebooks, and digital marketing all changed the industry. AI is simply the next chapter—but we believe people should remain at the center of storytelling.
That’s the standard we’ll continue to uphold.
