Pumpkin Everything & a Good Book: Why Fall Is the Perfect Reading Season
Fall is my favorite season. There’s something about it that makes us want to slow down. The temperatures drop. The leaves begin to change. Sweaters come out of the closet. And suddenly, everything: coffee, candles, desserts, and breakfast foods needs to be pumpkin flavored.
Yes, pumpkin everything has arrived. And honestly? We’re not complaining. Because fall might just be the perfect season to curl up with a good book.
Summer reading has its place. There’s something wonderful about taking a book to the beach, sitting by the pool, or reading on the porch while the sun stays out until nearly bedtime. But fall reading feels different. Fall practically begs you to stay inside.
You make yourself a pumpkin spice latte, grab your favorite blanket, put on your coziest sweater, and settle into your favorite chair. Outside, the wind is blowing and the leaves are falling.
Inside? You have a book. That’s a pretty good afternoon.
There is a reason the word cozy is practically synonymous with fall. We light candles. We turn on fireplaces. We bake. We decorate. We make soups and stews. We pull blankets onto the couch. And we read. There is something particularly satisfying about reading when the world outside is getting darker and colder. Maybe it’s the contrast. The colder it gets outside, the more appealing that warm cup of coffee and comfortable chair become. And the better your book feels in your hands.
Some people like pumpkin. Some people pass. And then there is the enthusiast, like me. During this time of year, pumpkin stops being a food and becomes an entire personality. Pumpkin coffee. Pumpkin bread. Pumpkin muffins. Pumpkin pie. Pumpkin candles. Pumpkin decorations. Pumpkin-scented everything. And somehow, we’re perfectly happy about it.
Fall gives us permission to embrace little pleasures. We don’t need a reason to make a special drink or bake something that makes the house smell amazing. Sometimes you just need to say: It’s fall. I deserve pumpkin. And perhaps a book, too.
If you want to create the ultimate fall reading experience, the recipe is simple: One good book + one cozy blanket + one pumpkin-flavored treat + absolutely nowhere you need to be. That’s it. You don’t need an elaborate reading nook. You don’t need an expensive coffee machine. You don’t even need a fireplace. Find a comfortable spot. Turn off your notifications. Make something warm to drink. Open your book. For a little while, let yourself disappear somewhere else.
Fall also brings a wonderful opportunity to explore books you might have overlooked. Maybe there’s an author you’ve been meaning to try. Maybe there’s a new release sitting on your TBR. Maybe your friend keeps telling you, “You HAVE to read this.” Maybe you wander into a bookstore and pick up a book simply because the cover catches your attention. That’s one of the best things about reading. There are always more stories waiting. And fall is a perfect time to find one.
So Bring on the Pumpkin
We know pumpkin season can be excessive. But that’s part of the fun. Fall isn’t really about needing pumpkin-flavored toothpaste or finding seventeen different ways to put pumpkin in your breakfast. It’s about embracing the season, slowing down and enjoying the little things. And it’s about finding a few quiet moments for yourself.
So grab that pumpkin spice latte. Light the candle. Put on the sweater. Pull the blanket over your feet. And open a good book. Because if fall is going to give us pumpkin everything, we might as well add a little reading to the mix.
